Through this heartfelt, humorous, inspirational, and brutally honest collection of essays, PATHS Humanitarian Writing Award winner H.L. Sudler embarks upon a journey of self-discovery in his quest to define what it truly means to be a patriarch in the wake of his father's death.

PATRIARCH: 10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
This set of essays is a work of art. It is one moment tragic and the next a revelation of joy. The honesty and vulnerability the author offers reminds one of what it is to be human, nothing special, nothing added. So well-written and put together Patriarch is a book for these complex times. If for no other reason, this book needs to be offered to all people because it has the power to make us all a little kinder.

I loved reading every essay. Each one has its own flavor, tone, ease of presentation. Bring along tissues for The Acceptance Speech. This book allowed me to recapture moments in my life that were similar but at the time unspoken, could never find the words to express how I felt. I recommend this book while sitting down for coffee in the morning. You won’t want to put it down because savoring it feels right.

This is an extraordinary book.

BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ. I LOVED READING ABOUT H.L.'S JOURNEY TO BECOMING THE MAN HE IS TODAY. I FOUND IT VERY DIFFICULT TO PULL MYSELF AWAY FROM READING.

Through his collection of essays, Sudler provides a deeply self-reflective account of growing up in a fractured family and struggling through many prejudices. Both heartbreaking and heartwarming, the essays are written with such raw emotion that I felt as though I was living the events with him. Truly brave writing.
